Whiny the pooh

"It's not the greatest movie in the world, but..."

submission: Whiny the pooh
date: December 12, 2009

...I really, really like the image of a grumpy, obese, distorted, unshaven Winnie the Pooh gagging and flopped onto a table making gargling bear noises.

This could have gone a more detailed direction than it did (for example, Pooh could have gotten more horribly stuck than usual in Rabbit's home hole entrance), but the more I think about it, the more this movie seems accurate as it is. Lovely work, Emanhattan.

It's educational and it's funny, which is typically an interesting and nice mix.

The math punchline at the end is the best part.

Although I disagree with your view on the Super Mario Bros. Z and found most of the animation and expression of this collaboration to be subpar, I have to admit the way Sonic ran in Levon's piece made me laugh.

Miami Shark

"While the art's nice, the game itself is mediocre."

submission: Miami Shark
date: October 12, 2009

I'm going to give this game my honest rating, and I won't go into a big speech about how overrated I think it is, but I just don't really understand how people are in awe by this game.

This game has some decent graphics, what with the scrolling city, the boats, the swimming people, so on. It has eye candy, like explosions and blur effects. But that's pretty close to all that's interesting about this game.

The gameplay is very, very simple. You move up and down, and you keep pressing A, and meanwhile, stuff explodes and dies. The only real variety is in the objects and people you pass. I like the little minigame-style feature of pulling down helicopters and planes, but was disappointed to discover there was nothing else like that anywhere in the game.

Overall this game feels 'choppy'. It doesn't lag for me or anything like that, but it feels thrown-together excluding the artsy backgrounds. The ActionScript, while impressive for things like chain reaction explosions and camera zooms, could have been much smoother for the controls and the motions of everything. The shark's tail is the only thing on the screen of the game that seemed to move with ease, which seems out of place when the rest of the shark suddenly moves in any direction without acceleration, seeing it suddenly shift in rotation going up or down.

Granted, this game did entertain me for a few minutes, mostly with pulling helicopters and planes out of the sky, but that wraps up as the whole game to me. Nothing really keeps it going, and only the explosions and the speed of the water give off the illusion that this game is 'intense'.

Super Mario bros Z ep.8

"What's not to like about this series?"

date: October 11, 2009

Most people take three things into consideration when voting on a movie: its humor, its animation, and how overrated/underrated it is, which really isn't fair, because everyone has a different sense of humor, and the heart of a movie past its graphics is what really matters most.

I personally find the Super Mario Bros. Z series to have it all. Every episode is full of fresh hardcore battle action, dialogue fitting to each character, plot twists, crazy camera angles, and varied gags which are often visual. Plus, it has a great deal of creativity among sprite movies, both in its usage of already-existing concepts and in its never-before-heard-of characters and areas. The storyline of this series reigns over others with good guys and bad guys because you can tell the villains never hesitate on their decisions and will stop at nothing to get what they truly want, which makes for some pretty intense battle sequences and close calls.

I found myself laughing at most of the jokes in this episode, even the meme ones. You've got to love Luigi's insecure determination. I think the close-ups and vector art were done just right, because they weren't alarmingly out-of-place. The 3D Doomship designed also seemed fitting in its Star Fox-esque simplicity.

Some of the pieces in the movie got me thinking. I hadn't really paid much attention to the silhouetted Dr. Robotnik until this episode where he looked at Sonic on the screen. In an earlier episode, it looked like Mecha Sonic destroyed him along with most of the Death Egg, yet somehow he seems to have landed in the Mushroom Kingdom, helping Bowser. I'm guessing since Eggman's still a dark, shady figure, this isn't meant to be revealed until he meets with Sonic again.

I really like Basilisx, for some reason. His similarities to a basilisk--the way he hisssses and freezes others into stone with a simple look--might be part of it and maybe his virtually indestructible outer body and wolverine claws might be another part of it, but I think most of it is his particularly evil cunning nature. He's a much darker character than most of the others, with his quick-thinking resort to trickery to take Mario down by using Luigi as his shield. I'd love to see more of Basilisx's demonic nature and battle ability.

This episode is not quite as epic as Episode 6 (which is definitely the most destructive episode, complete with the annihilation of an entire island), but with the cliffhanger of the Basilisx battle, this one definitely has that "has-all-hope-been-lost" intensity of the Metal Bowser battle in the second episode. I can't wait to see the next installment, and maybe--just maybe--it will take less than a year to make this time :P

Waiting for the Bus!

"Wow."

date: September 9, 2009

I expected this to be just another Cyanide and Happiness short with a simple joke and an unexpected punchline.

Instead, it was artistically brilliant, a little movie with a whole life story, accompanied by perfect music and a subtle yet powerful message, with little bits of dark humor here and there. It gave me goosebumps. Who knew waiting for the bus could branch out into such a wonderful film?

It was so magically depressing, and yet the ending still made me laugh.

Everything about this movie is unique. The art, the animation, the story, even the single cliche in the movie (the bedtime-storytelling method) was expressed differently here, being almost poetic for the first large portion of the movie, filled with enthusiasm. The sound in this movie, music and voice, fit perfectly with the rest of everything.

This movie excels in all aspects. Remarkable work.

"Very well thought-out."

This made me smile more than all the other clock movies this year just by the pure genius of FUClock. The art and music really set the mood, and the way the evidence and the story worked throughout the movie... It just took me by surprise.

I've watched all the Clock Day 09 movies on the Front Page, in the Top 10, and in a couple of other places, but this one in my opinion should be the winner.
